Allen & Overy – Migration and the Law

Young Citizens partnered with global law firm Allen & Overy, to create an educational programme that aimed to support the mission of their Charity of the Year, War Child, whilst also utilising the skills of their employees.

In response to the brief we created a programme of work that taught young people about the UK and International Laws that surround the migration of people. The educational programme was made up of three parts; a Classroom Resource, a Legal Experts in Schools unit and a Legal Workshop. More information about each of these, and their impact, can be found below.

“The lesson was thought-provoking and engaged the students.” Teacher, St Gabriel’s College.

Phase 1: The Classroom Resource

Our Education Team, with support from legal professionals at Allen & Overy, created a one-hour classroom resource for teachers to use to conduct a lesson examining the laws and ethics surrounding migration. We marketed this free resource to our extensive database of secondary school teachers. Due to the amount of teachers downloading the classroom resource, we estimate it reached over 65,000 young people across the UK.

Phase 2: The Legal Experts in Schools unit

We adapted the content of the classroom resource to create a new unit that could sit as part of our employee volunteering programme, Legal Experts in Schools. Now any firm across the UK that is taking part in the programme can select this module to use in the classroom.

Phase 3: A Legal Workshop

Finally, our Education Team created a 2.5 hour Legal Workshop resource which further examined the laws and ethics surrounding the migration of people. This Workshop was piloted by employees at Allen & Overy and proved a great success with young people, teachers and the volunteers. It is now available as a topic for any company wishing to take part in a Legal Workshop.

"Thank you for inspiring pupils interested in a career in law but also to look at the moral perspectives involved with decision making as some of the responses I heard, and that were shared, showed a great deal of maturity and consideration of the topic." Teacher, Crayford Academy.
