Young Citizens shortlisted for Charity of the Year Award

We’re celebrating the exciting news that we’ve been shortlisted for the coveted title of Charity of the Year, in the Charity Times Awards for 2019.

This news comes in our 30th birthday year, at a time when we are reaching more children and young people through our range of programmes designed to help them become active, engaged and motivated young citizens. Over the past year:

240,000 children and young people have benefited from our work – either directly through involvement in our programmes, or because we have helped their school to improve its citizenship education

2,300 schools have been part of our work, across the UK, with an even split between primary and secondary level

2,500 volunteers have helped to deliver our programmes – often experts in professions such as law, media, politics and economics, many of our volunteers work directly with children and young people

319 events have been held for Young Citizens, including Mock Trials, student workshops, teacher training and celebration events.

During this time we’ve also been busy updating our appeal and the ways we work – with a new name and brand – Young Citizens – replacing the previous ‘Citizenship Foundation’, and investment in improving our digital estate so that we can deliver much more of our work online.

Tom Franklin, CEO of Young Citizens, commented,

“This is fantastic recognition for the hard work of trustees, staff and volunteers over the past year.  With the rise in cynicism about democratic society and institutions, our work has never been more important. We’ve had a clear strategy in place to increase our impact for young people and to modernise our appeal. We couldn’t be more thrilled to be on the shortlist.”

The awards will be taking place at the beginning of October 2019.  A full list of the categories and shortlists can be viewed here.
