Theory of Change is increasingly used by business and not-for-profit organisations to show how and why a desired change is expected to be achieved.

It shows how a particular programme or activity leads to an organisation’s ultimate aims being achieved. It does this by working back from those ultimate aims to identify all the outcomes that must be in place for those aims to be achieved.

In our case the ultimate aim is ‘a fair and inclusive society based on a strong and secure democracy’.

Our Theory of Change helps us identify what types of activity will lead to the initial outcomes we want in order to achieve the long-term aims. This helps us to plan more effectively, because all our activities are linked to a detailed understanding of how change comes about. It also leads to better evaluation, as it is makes it easier to measure our progress towards the outcomes we want, and the ultimate achievement of our aims.
